Reading Cicero's De Senectute (Advanced)

$300.00

Instructor:

Cori "Conradus" Russo

Description:

This course will consist of close guided reading of one of Cicero's shorter philosophical works, Cato Maior De Senectute. Our goal will be to read as far as possible in the book, covering 5 to 10 capitula per session, attending closely to how much can be learned about the Latin language and Latin style from each sentence but with opportunities provided for discussion of the philosophical arguments advanced in the book. The course will be conducted entirely in Latin. Participants will not be expected to prepare in advance, as the instructor will provide vocabulary, grammatical, cultural, and historical support as needed. Provided below is a sample from the text of a single capitulum (the goal, as mentioned, is to read closely through 5-10 such capitula per session with support). In this passage from the introduction, Cicero is addressing his friend Atticus, to whom he has dedicated the book.
