Annoying Greek people: Selections from Theophrastus (Intermediate to Advanced)
Instructor:
Description:
Have you ever wondered what really got under the skin of ancient Athenians? Or better yet—have you ever wanted to master the fine art of being insufferable in classical Attic?
This course will give you that chance. But beware—it’s not as easy as it sounds! The Athenians had countless ways to be a nuisance, and at least twice as many Greek words to describe them.
Through a selection of texts from Theophrastus’s Characters, we will dive into the world of bothersome personalities, discussing the texts in Ancient Greek. Each session will focus on a specific trait—ἀπόνοια, ἀρέσκεια, δεισιδαιμονία, βδελυρία…—enriching our vocabulary and phraseology along the way. If time allows, we’ll also engage in exercises and drills to enhance fluency in spoken Attic.
Sessions take place via Zoom and are capped at 8 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.
Schedule:
8 1-hour sessions over 8 weeks
Saturdays, 10:00 am - 11:00 am EST*
April 12, 2025 - May 31, 2025
*The course will observe US time, including major US federal holidays. If participants miss a session because they are observing a religious holiday, they can arrange a separate session with the instructor.
Cost:
USD 200 ($25/ session)
What you’ll need:
Zoom
Decent internet
Earphones
Microphone
Webcam (preferred but optional)
A quiet space for classes
