Praelectiones Neo-Latinae (all levels)
Instructor:
Description:
Neo-Latin literature is a vast and rich territory to explore—often intimidatingly so without a guide. This course will be a no-prep-needed intro to Neo-Latin through a broad sampling of authors and texts, chosen based on enrolled students’ interests. The format differs from many LAC Latin courses: most of the hour will be the instructor talking through a passage of Neo-Latin Latine tantum, both unknotting the tough parts and offering context and commentary. This means students can kick back and listen and will be able to follow regardless of Latin speaking experience, as long as they have had some experience reading original Latin texts (by whatever method) and especially experience listening to Latin.
The instructor will send out a survey to enrolled students to help with text selection but aims to cover at least a few substantially different genres and/or regions in the mix. Options include Petrarch or other humanists as poets or letter writers, (accessible!) philosophical and scientific writings from Early Modern Europe or later Jesuit scientific expeditions, science fiction and other adventure-novel traditions, or Latin poetry written in the Americas.
Sessions take place via Zoom and are capped at 8 enrollments. Due to the more lecture-style nature of this course, Jamie is offering it at a lower price point—while still delivering all the value of Jamie’s Latin expertise!
Also, note that these sessions will be recorded and shared with those who enroll. The course’s lecture-style nature makes this a not-to-miss opportunity for those interested in later Latin texts!
Schedule:
8 1-hour sessions over 8 weeks
Sundays, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST*
April 6, 2025 - June 1, 2025

• Earphones
• Microphone
