Ovid's Poems in Exile (Intermediate-Advanced)

$200.00

Instructor:

Jamie “Iacobus” Banks

Description:

The Augustan poet Ovid's literary brilliance and thematic range need no introduction (nor, perhaps, does his self-confidence). A few of his works, however, do: even those of us who have done courses on Ovid in Latin are most likely to have read from his epic Metamorphoses, love elegies, and/or the poem on the Art of Love that seems to have caused quite a stir in his time. If we've encountered him in translation, it is often the works that have long been prized sources of information on mythology, Roman religion, or the too-rare voices of heroines.

In this course we will look to Ovid's poetry written in exile, treating selections from his Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto. These works have enjoyed a more variable critical reception over the centuries than his others, but enough of them merit close attention to sustain readers for far longer than the 8 weeks we'll have together. We will read deeply more than broadly in this course, getting the chance to discuss smaller selections at greater length. This tighter focus can be helpful for students who may not yet have read lots of Latin literature while allowing more experienced readers, too, the pleasures of close (re-)reading. No prior reading of Ovid is assumed and there is no expectation that students prepare material outside of class sessions.

Sessions will take place via Zoom and are capped at 8 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.
