Gender, Sex and Power in Ovid (Intermediate to Advanced)
Instructor:
Description:
This course will use key episodes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and, more briefly, his Heroides to ground discussions on three interrelated issues, mostly in Ovid but also in the Roman social and literary context: How do we think and talk about consent in sexual encounters, especially between male gods and mortal women? Where/can we find models for transgender characters and gender fluidity when so many sex changes are punishments from the gods? Most broadly, in what ways and how much do women characters get a voice through Ovid?
Sessions take place via Zoom and are capped at 8 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.
Schedule:
8 1-hour sessions over 8 weeks
Sundays, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST*
