Epitomizing Epitomes: Justin on Pompeius Trogus on the Sack of Delphi (Novice-Intermediate)

$200.00

Instructor:

Joe "Iosephus" Watkins

Description:

In this class, we will read the (Latin) account of the Gallic sack of Delphi from Justin's digest of Pompeius Trogus. In addition we will devote time to practicing our own epitomizing skills, writing short summaries (in Latin) of what we read and discuss in class.
Pompeius Trogus was a contemporary of Livy, and alongside Sallust and Tacitus was one of the great Historians of the Latin Language. Unfortunately, his own words are lost, but fortunately Justin (2nd Century) wrote an epitomizing digest of his histories. As we'll see, despite being a "digest" or "epitome," Justin's account is quite rich, full of detail, and written in beautiful Latin, making for excellent (and unconventional) reading.
In addition, we will take a little class time to incorporate focused writing practice, with attention both to the conceptual practice of summarizing (what to leave in, what to leave out) and the actual writing of Latin.
No advance preparation is required (in fact, I would prefer if you didn't), and no outside writing will be required either.

Sessions take place via Zoom and are capped at 9 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.
