Apollo and Daphne Through the Ages (Intermediate to Advanced)

$200.00

Instructor:

Jamie “Iacobus” Banks

Description:

The myth of Apollo and Daphne, its literary version most well-known from Ovid, inspired adaptation and interpretation across media and the centuries of later European literature. In this course, we will trace it through time and contexts, starting with a detailed consideration of Ovid's ancient text, moving through the Christianizing moral interpretations and commentaries of the Middle Ages, and ending with Early Modern ("Renaissance") versions largely inspired by the Italian poet Petrarch. We will pair texts with visual art in all sessions so that in addition to a deep familiarity with the myth and its literary adaptations, students will learn ways to discuss and interpret art in Latin conversation.

Sessions take place via Zoom and are capped at 8 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.

Schedule:

8 1-hour sessions over 8 weeks

Tuesdays, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST*

April 15, 2025 - June 3, 2025

*The course will observe US time, including major US federal holidays. If participants miss a session because they are observing a religious holiday, they can arrange a separate session with the instructor.

Cost:

USD 200 ($25/ session)
