Arianne “Ariadne” Belzer-Carroll
Salvete! I'm Arianne, Ariadne Latine, and I think maybe more people call me Ariadne than not! My pronouns are she/anything said with respect. I called my mother in eighth grade after seeing Dead Poets Society to tell her that if they make you take Latin in high school, I wasn't going to high school. She kindly didn't mention this to me when I told her I was majoring in Latin. She also didn't mention it to me when I sat silently among Bob Patrick's cheerfully talkative Latin II students, taking panicked notes on how you say such things as "can I go to the bathroom." (The notes are real. Also full of endearing mistakes on my end.) The transition from can't-talk to can-talk is a real one, and every step of it is worth being proud of for all of us. These days I live in Georgia where I now have an untextbooked classroom full of cheerfully talkative Latin II (and I and III and IV) students. I'm an alumna of Agnes Scott College, also in Georgia, and I am the founder of Biduum Georgianum. My particular interests are in othering, monsterization, politics, and un-whitewashing texts in terms of gender, sexuality, class, and race. Also, I secretly love Theocritus.
Learning to speak Latin has been a challenging and deeply rewarding journey for me--frankly, I was the worst Latin student in my class every year until I learned to speak--and I'm looking forward to walking with you in your journey, too, wherever you happen to be right now.
When I'm not teaching Latin, mostly I'm teaching Latin. The rest of the time, I'm usually writing a book in Latin, hanging out with my son (also possibly in Latin), or knitting something (not usually in Latin!).
